Turkey eSIM: unlimited or prepaid data on all three networks
A Turkey eSIM from esimgenius is a data-only plan for Turkey (Türkiye). Pay, and the QR code reaches your inbox within seconds. Scan it at home over Wi-Fi, keep the line off, and the plan starts only when the eSIM first connects to a Turkish network. Your own SIM stays active for calls and texts.
Turkey is our best-selling destination. 14 plans run from a long weekend in Istanbul to 180 days: fixed-data plans from $1 with allowances up to 100 GB, and Unlimited from $6 with no throttling. Hotspot is allowed on every plan, and you get a full refund if the eSIM cannot be installed (how it works).
One thing makes Turkey different. Since 10 July 2025 the regulator BTK has had Turkish networks block the websites and apps of named foreign eSIM sellers; in a September 2026 test from a Türk Telekom line in Istanbul, 15 of 19 stores were unreachable. An installed eSIM keeps working. So buy and install before you fly, and keep the QR email.
Which networks does the Turkey eSIM use?
Your eSIM roams on Türk Telekom / Vodafone / Turkcell: all three Turkish operators on one profile. The phone attaches to whichever has signal where you stand, and you can pick one manually under network selection. Many travel eSIMs for Turkey ride a single network; ours can switch.
Expect 4G/LTE. All three operators switched on 5G in Turkey's 81 provincial centres on 1 April 2026, but whether a roaming profile gets 5G is up to the visited network, and most usage in Turkey is still 4G in 2026. Plan on fast 4G; treat 5G as a bonus.
Turkcell
Turkey's largest operator, about 39% of mobile subscribers (BTK, Q4 2025). Turkcell says it covers over 99% of the population; Lycian Way hikers report it holds the best signal in the mountains, and one traveller measured 20–40 Mbps in Istanbul.
Vodafone
Third by subscribers, about 29% (BTK, Q4 2025), on the former Telsim network.
Türk Telekom
Second-largest, about 32% of subscribers (BTK, Q4 2025). Its mobile arm, now TT Mobil, traded as Avea until 2016, which is why some eSIM sellers still list Avea. Traveller guides rate it fine in cities and weakest outside towns, where switching networks pays off.
Coverage in Turkey: where the eSIM works well, and where it drops
Istanbul: strong on all three networks; signal can drop inside Galata's thick-walled stone buildings. Istanbul Airport's free Wi-Fi needs an SMS code to a working number or a passport scan at a kiosk, and many eSIM stores are blocked even on Wi-Fi. Land with it installed.
All three operators cover the Antalya coast, from the city to Side and Alanya, and the resort towns of Bodrum and Marmaris. Antalya and Izmir, both provincial centres, have had 5G on the local networks since April 2026; on a roaming eSIM, plan on 4G/LTE.
Fethiye and Kaş: along the Lycian Way coast, hikers report very good reception, and one traveller measured 10–15 Mbps on 4G in the mountains above Fethiye. Inland the trail is patchy: deep canyons and remote sections such as Demre to Finike can have no reception at all, so carry offline maps.
Cappadocia: good data in Göreme, Ürgüp, Avanos and Uçhisar, but valleys, cave rooms behind thick stone and underground cities can weaken or kill reception; one traveller's eSIM dropped under 3 Mbps. We have no data on signal during balloon flights. Download offline maps before hiking the valleys.
Good to know before you land in Turkey
- eSIMs are legal, but buy and install before you fly
- eSIMs are legal in Turkey and Turkish operators sell them. What BTK's decision of 10 July 2025 did was block eight foreign eSIM storefronts, and 2026 tests found many more unreachable; an installed eSIM is unaffected. We do not promise esimgenius.ai loads on Turkish networks, so install at home and size the plan accordingly.
- No phone registration for visitors on this eSIM
- The 120-day IMEI rule is for phones used with a Turkish operator's SIM: the operator pairs your IMEI with the Turkish number, and after 120 days an unregistered phone is cut off unless you pay 54,258 TL (2026). A roaming eSIM never enters that registry. A phone already blocked stays blocked.
- Social media can be restricted for up to two days
- Human Rights Watch documented restrictions on X, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Telegram in Istanbul for 42 hours in March 2025, and for about 21 hours from 7 September 2025 with WhatsApp and Signal included. Turkey has no permanent block on messaging or app calls; these are episodes tied to political events, and a VPN installed before you travel is the usual workaround.
- Booking.com does not work for Turkish hotels from inside Turkey
- A 2017 court ruling bars Booking.com from selling stays inside Turkey: searches for Turkish hotels fail from Turkish networks. A bill to let it return reached parliament in August 2026 and had not passed as of 30 September 2026. Book Turkish hotels before you arrive, or use a VPN.
- At Istanbul Airport, a SIM costs about double the city price
- A travel blog's price check at Istanbul Airport in September 2026 found tourist packs at about 1,900 to 4,100 TL, against about 1,000 to 1,500 TL in city stores in August 2026. Buying one needs passport identity verification, and a new line carries a fixed 700 TL tax (2026).
- Turkey is in the Middle East and Global plans, not Europe
- For Turkey plus Greece, pair this eSIM with a Greece eSIM or take the Global plan; the Middle East plan also includes Turkey. Turkey is outside EU roam-like-at-home, so an EU phone pays non-EU rates: see eSIM vs roaming charges.
How much data do you need for Turkey?
As a rough guide: maps, messaging and a few photos use 500 MB to 1 GB a day. A normal tourist day with Instagram, translation, ride-hailing and the odd video call runs about 1–2 GB. Hotspotting a laptop, streaming or uploading video makes 3–5 GB days routine; a video call alone uses roughly 1–1.5 GB an hour at medium quality.
Size the plan for every day of the trip before you fly: top-ups add data to the same eSIM, but we do not promise our store loads on Turkish networks. Between two sizes, take the bigger one. Fixed plans go up to 100 GB; if you would rather not count at all, go Unlimited.
Unlimited eSIM for Turkey: unlimited data, no throttling
Our Unlimited plans for Turkey are fully unlimited data — no throttling. Hotspot is included.
Pick Unlimited from $6 if you take video calls most days, tether a laptop, or want one eSIM feeding the family's devices; the cheapest Unlimited tier works out at $2 a day. A fixed plan stays the better buy for a maps-and-messages traveller.
Turkey eSIM — common questions
How fast does my eSIM activate?
Scan the QR from your order email and your phone provisions the eSIM profile — typically under a minute. Your data line goes live the moment you connect to a local network in Turkey, usually right when you land.
Will it work on my phone?
Any phone with eSIM support. That covers iPhone XS (2018) and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, Galaxy S20 and newer, and most modern unlocked Android phones. If Settings shows an "Add eSIM" or "Add cellular plan" option, you're compatible. Carrier-locked phones from US carriers may need unlocking first.
Which eSIM is best for Turkey?
The best eSIM for Turkey roams on all three Turkish networks and, if you go unlimited, has no throttling; install it before you fly. Ours roams on Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom, its Unlimited plans are fully unlimited with no throttling, and it is refunded in full if it cannot be installed. For maps and messages, a fixed plan is enough.
Are eSIMs illegal in Turkey?
No. eSIMs work in Turkey and are not banned: the technology is legal and Turkish operators sell eSIMs themselves. On 10 July 2025 BTK had Turkish networks block eight foreign eSIM storefronts for selling without Turkish authorisation, and more have been blocked since. An eSIM already installed keeps working. Buy and install before you fly.
Can I buy or top up the eSIM after I land in Turkey?
Don't count on it. Turkish networks have blocked many foreign eSIM stores since July 2025, and we don't promise esimgenius.ai loads there. An installed eSIM keeps working, so buy enough data for the whole trip, install it at home and keep the QR email.
How much is an eSIM card in Turkey?
Our Turkey plans start at $1 for fixed data and $6 for Unlimited. A tourist SIM at Istanbul Airport cost about 1,900 to 4,100 TL in a travel blog's September 2026 price check, roughly double city-store prices. Roaming with your home carrier can be expensive: Turkey is outside EU roam-like-at-home.
What eSIM app can I use in Turkey?
You do not need one. Scan the QR code from your email at home over Wi-Fi, in your phone's settings (iPhone: Cellular, then Add eSIM; Android: the SIM or mobile network menu); our install guide has the steps. The free eSIM Genius app is optional and shows the data you have left. Install the eSIM before you fly: Turkish networks block many foreign eSIM sellers' sites and apps.
What if the eSIM doesn't activate?
You get a full refund if it cannot be installed or activated on your phone: email support@esimgenius.ai with your order number. Signal but no internet is usually a setting: check the eSIM line is on, data roaming is on for that line and it is selected for mobile data, then try picking a network manually.
Can I make calls or receive SMS with the eSIM?
Not regular calls or texts: the eSIM is data-only, with no Turkish number. WhatsApp and FaceTime calls run over its data. Keep your home SIM on for phone calls and bank codes, but turn off its data roaming and make the eSIM your mobile-data line. WhatsApp was restricted for about 21 hours in Istanbul in September 2025, so no guarantees.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot in Turkey?
Yes, on every plan, fixed or Unlimited, at no extra cost and with no separate tethering cap. Share it with a laptop or a partner.
When does my Turkey eSIM start counting days?
On the first connection to a network in Turkey, not at purchase or install. Install at home, keep the line off, switch it on when you land. An unstarted plan keeps for up to a year, so buying weeks ahead costs nothing.
Do I need to register my phone's IMEI in Turkey?
Not as a visitor using this eSIM. The 120-day rule targets phones used with a Turkish operator's SIM: after 120 days an unregistered phone is cut off unless you pay 54,258 TL (2026) via e-Devlet. A roaming eSIM never signs you up with a Turkish operator, so the clock never starts.
Do I need a VPN in Turkey?
Not for the eSIM to work. A VPN is legal in Turkey and helps with blocked sites (Booking.com included) and occasional social-media restrictions. Install it before you fly: in September 2026, 8 of 10 VPN websites were blocked from a Turkish line while installed apps kept working. No VPN is guaranteed.
Is there 5G in Turkey?
Yes, in all 81 provincial centres since 1 April 2026 on all three operators, with nationwide coverage due within about two years. Whether a roaming eSIM gets 5G is decided by the visited network, so we promise 4G/LTE and treat 5G as a bonus where it appears.
Does the Turkey eSIM work in Northern Cyprus?
No. Northern Cyprus (KKTC) has its own operators, Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell (KKTCELL) and KKTC Telsim; even Turkish SIMs only roam there. Our Turkey plan covers Turkey only. For the north, or the whole island, use our Cyprus eSIM, which covers KKTCELL and Telsim in the north too.

Incredible Data Provision
Its a very easy user experience, the set up of the sim literally takes a click or two and surprisingly I got data everywhere in Tunisia even in some parts of the desert somehow. Would definitely recommend because if you travel a decent amount the cashback system is good for saving money. Also they are the cheapest esim I could find compared to holafly, and other more well known ones
