Egypt eSIM: prepaid & unlimited data from $1

An eSIM for Egypt from esimgenius is a data-only plan, bought online with no airport kiosk queue; the QR code reaches your inbox within seconds. Install it at home over Wi-Fi and switch the line on when you land: the plan only starts on its first connection to a network in Egypt. Calls and texts stay on your own SIM.

14 plans cover anything from a 3-day Cairo stopover to a 180-day stay: fixed-data plans up to 100 GB, priced from $1, and Unlimited from $12 with no throttling. Every plan allows hotspot, and if the eSIM cannot be installed, you get a full refund (how it works).

The catch in Egypt is app calls. Egyptian mobile networks have restricted WhatsApp, FaceTime and other internet voice and video calls for years, and on our eSIM they may not connect, or may be poor. Messages, voice notes and photos go through. We cannot guarantee app calls, so keep your home SIM on for calls that must connect.

Egypt eSIM networks: Vodafone, Orange and e& (Etisalat)

Your eSIM roams on Vodafone, Orange and e& Egypt (Etisalat): three of Egypt's four mobile operators on one profile. Some travel eSIMs for Egypt ride Orange alone; with three, the phone attaches to whichever has signal, or you pick one under network selection. The fourth operator, WE (Telecom Egypt), is not on it.

Plan on 4G/LTE. Egypt switched on 5G on 4 June 2025, with a launch event by the Giza pyramids, but most mobile use was still on 4G in 2025, and a roaming profile only gets 5G where the visited network allows it.

  • Vodafone

Egypt's largest operator: about 53 million mobile and internet subscribers in 2025 (Vodafone Egypt, January 2026). Travel guides updated in 2026 rate it the most reliable network nationwide.

  • Orange

The former Mobinil, rebranded Orange in March 2016, and the network most travel eSIMs use in Egypt. Guides call it strong in cities and tourist zones, from Cairo, Alexandria and Luxor to Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Marsa Alam.

  • e& (Etisalat)

Branded "etisalat by e&" since June 2022; locals still say Etisalat. Guides found its signal weaker indoors in Cairo (April 2026) and slightly weaker than Vodafone and Orange in Sharm El Sheikh's tourist zones (February 2026). Where it is weak, your phone can switch to Vodafone or Orange.

Egypt eSIM coverage: Cairo, the Nile and the Red Sea

Cairo and Giza, the Pyramids included, have strong 4G; a July 2026 field test of travel eSIMs found coverage consistent through Cairo and along the Nile.

Luxor and Aswan have good 4G in town and at the main temple sites; guides say it thins at remote sites and on the West Bank away from town. Vodafone is the network most often reported strongest in Upper Egypt.

On a Luxor–Aswan Nile cruise you have signal for most of the trip: strong near towns, locks and the temple stops at Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo, with gaps on the open river between them. A first-hand report from March 2022 found mobile coverage on a local SIM "generally excellent" while the boat's Wi-Fi reached only the lobby.

Hurghada: a local guide (September 2025) quotes typical city speeds of 20–50 Mbps and says outlying Makadi Bay and Safaga "may drop slightly". On Giftun island trips, a January 2026 guide found only Vodafone reliable, Orange only sometimes. In Sharm El Sheikh, a February 2026 airport guide recommends Vodafone for strong coverage at hotels, beaches and on excursions.

Weak spots: the desert road from Aswan to Abu Simbel, about 280 km, has patchy signal at best, returning at the temples; in the Western Desert, the UK Foreign Office notes "limited phone reception" around Bahariya, Farafra and the White and Black Deserts (September 2026). Download offline maps and tickets before any desert day.

Good to know before you land in Egypt

WhatsApp and FaceTime calls may not connect
The regulator, NTRA, said in late 2024 it planned to lift a long-standing ban on internet voice and video calls; Freedom House found it still in force at the end of May 2025, and a July 2026 field test of travel eSIMs reported calls still blocked. Messages and voice notes work; we cannot guarantee app calls.
No phone registration for visitors on a foreign SIM
Since 21 January 2026, phones brought into Egypt no longer get a blanket customs exemption, but visitors are covered: the regulator's phone-registration FAQ says a tourist using a foreign SIM owes no fees, and a tourist on an Egyptian SIM is exempt for 90 days per visit. A roaming eSIM is a foreign profile, not an Egyptian SIM.
Airport SIMs: cheap per gigabyte, passport required
Cairo airport kiosks sold data packs from about 208 EGP (5 GB) to about 867 EGP (54 GB) in an April 2026 travel-blog price check. Every local SIM is registered against your passport; Hurghada airport's kiosks were cash-only and sold no eSIMs in January 2026. Prices change often: the regulator approved rises of up to 30% in December 2024.
Grand Egyptian Museum tickets: book on visit-gem.com
In December 2025 Egypt's tourism ministry named visit-gem.com the only official and authorised website for Grand Egyptian Museum tickets, so skip look-alike sellers. The museum, about 2 km from the Giza pyramids, opened in November 2025.
Uber skips Luxor, Aswan and Sharm El Sheikh
Ride-hailing runs on your data, but city lists differ: as of September 2026, Uber covers Cairo, Alexandria and Hurghada but not Luxor, Aswan or Sharm El Sheikh, where Careem operates. Install both apps before you fly.
Egypt is in the Middle East, Africa and Global plans, not Europe
For Egypt plus Israel, the Middle East plan covers both, and Turkey too. The Africa plan and the Global plan also include Egypt; no Europe plan does. Comparing with your carrier's roaming? See eSIM vs roaming charges.

How much data do you need for a week in Egypt?

Our rough guide: light use (maps, messaging, browsing, a few photos) runs 500 MB to 1 GB a day, and normal sightseeing with Instagram, translation and ride-hailing about 1–2 GB a day. That makes 7–14 GB for a sightseeing week and 14–28 GB for two weeks; a beach week of light use needs 3.5–7 GB.

Hotspotting a laptop, streaming or uploading video makes 3–5 GB days routine: that is Unlimited territory. On a fixed plan, if you run low, the eSIM Genius app tops up the same eSIM in one tap, no new QR code.

Unlimited data eSIM for Egypt: no throttling

Our Unlimited plans for Egypt are fully unlimited data — no throttling — and hotspot is included.

Unlimited starts at $12 (from $4 a day) and pays off when one eSIM feeds a family's phones on a Red Sea week, or a laptop on the hotspot. For maps and messages a fixed plan is the better buy, and no plan changes how Egyptian networks treat app calls.

Unlimited Data eSIM for Egypt

Egypt eSIM — common questions

How fast does my eSIM activate?

Scan the QR from your order email and your phone provisions the eSIM profile — typically under a minute. Your data line goes live the moment you connect to a local network in Egypt, usually right when you land.

Will it work on my phone?

Any phone with eSIM support. That covers iPhone XS (2018) and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, Galaxy S20 and newer, and most modern unlocked Android phones. If Settings shows an "Add eSIM" or "Add cellular plan" option, you're compatible. Carrier-locked phones from US carriers may need unlocking first.

What happens if I run out of data — can I top up?

Yes. Top up any time from your account: pick another plan, pay, and the data is added to the same eSIM within seconds. No new QR code, no reinstall. Works for every plan we sell, including the regional and global ones. The top-up's validity counter starts when the data starts being used, same as the original plan.

What is the best eSIM for Egypt?

The best eSIM for Egypt is one that can switch networks and matches your data habit. Ours roams on Vodafone, Orange and e&, where some travel eSIMs ride Orange alone. Fixed plans start at $1, Unlimited has no throttling, and you get a refund if it cannot be installed.

Does eSIM work in Egypt? Can tourists use one?

Yes: tourists can use a travel eSIM in Egypt; it roams on Egyptian networks like any foreign SIM, ours on Vodafone, Orange and e&. You need an eSIM-capable, unlocked phone. Data, maps and WhatsApp messages work; app voice and video calls may not.

How much does an eSIM for Egypt cost?

Our eSIM for Egypt costs from $1 for fixed data and from $12 for Unlimited. Local SIMs are cheap per gigabyte: Cairo airport kiosks sold 21 GB on Vodafone for about 494 EGP in an April 2026 price check. The eSIM's edge is landing connected.

Is it better to buy a SIM card at Cairo Airport or an eSIM?

An eSIM if you want to land connected; a local SIM if the lowest price per gigabyte matters most. Local SIMs are registered against your passport: at Cairo airport's kiosks, by the baggage belts, staff copy it along with your visa. An eSIM installs at home from a QR code.

Can I use WhatsApp calls in Egypt, or are they blocked?

Not reliably: WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app voice and video calls have been restricted on Egyptian mobile networks for years. On our eSIM they may not connect, or may be poor, so we cannot guarantee them; messages, voice notes and photos work. Egypt's January 2025 Wi-Fi Calling launch covers Egyptian SIM lines, not WhatsApp.

Do I need a VPN in Egypt?

No: the eSIM, maps and messaging all work without one, and we don't claim a VPN brings back app calls. If you want one anyway, install it before you fly: Freedom House reported that the sites blocked in Egypt by November 2020 included 394 VPN and proxy providers.

Which mobile network is best in Egypt for eSIM?

Vodafone is the one travel guides rate most reliable nationwide, and the only one reported to hold on boat trips off Hurghada; Orange is strong in cities and resorts. You don't have to choose: our eSIM roams on Vodafone, Orange and e&, and the phone attaches to whichever has signal.

Does Egypt have 5G, and is it available on eSIMs?

Egypt has had 5G since 4 June 2025, but on a travel eSIM, plan on 4G. Most mobile use there was still on 4G in 2025, and whether a roaming profile gets 5G is decided by the visited network, so we promise 4G/LTE and treat 5G as a bonus.

Can I make calls or send SMS with an Egypt eSIM, and keep my number?

No calls or SMS on the eSIM: it is data-only, with no Egyptian number. Keep your own SIM on alongside it for calls, texts and bank codes, so your number keeps working. Set the eSIM as your mobile-data line; WhatsApp keeps your usual number and runs on the eSIM's data.

Can I use hotspot or tethering with an Egypt eSIM?

Yes. Every Egypt plan, fixed or Unlimited, allows hotspot at no extra cost, with no separate tethering cap; whatever you share simply draws on the plan's data.

When should I activate my eSIM for Egypt? Can I buy it after I land?

Install it at home over Wi-Fi and keep the line off until you land: the plan starts on its first connection to a network in Egypt, not at purchase or install, and keeps for up to a year until then (how to install an eSIM). Bought after landing, install it over Wi-Fi; it starts as soon as it connects.

What if my Egypt eSIM doesn't activate?

Check three settings: the eSIM line is on, data roaming is on for it, and it is selected for mobile data; signal with no internet is usually one of these. Then pick Vodafone, Orange or e& manually. If it still won't install or activate, email support@esimgenius.ai for a full refund.

Incredible Data Provision

Its a very easy user experience, the set up of the sim literally takes a click or two and surprisingly I got data everywhere in Tunisia even in some parts of the desert somehow. Would definitely recommend because if you travel a decent amount the cashback system is good for saving money. Also they are the cheapest esim I could find compared to holafly, and other more well known ones
